Does turning airplane mode on and off fix signal?

Turning airplane mode on and off, the classic airplane mode signal trick, can fix one kind of problem: when your phone is stuck on a poor or wrong cell and has not noticed a better one. The toggle makes it disconnect and search again from scratch. It cannot create signal that is not there, so if the area has weak coverage, the bars will come back just as low.

What airplane mode actually does

Airplane mode switches off the phone's radios: mobile, and usually Wi-Fi and Bluetooth too, although many phones let you turn those back on while in airplane mode. When you switch it off again, the phone starts fresh:

  1. It scans for available cells around you.
  2. It picks the best one it can find, based on signal strength and quality.
  3. It registers with your carrier's network.
  4. It sets up data and calling again.

That is the same thing that happens when you restart the phone, just faster.

When the airplane mode signal trick helps

After leaving a dead zone. Coming out of a lift, a tunnel or an underground car park, phones sometimes take a while to find signal again. A quick toggle can make it search immediately.

When the phone clings to a far-away cell. As you move, your phone normally hands over to better cells. Sometimes it holds on to a weak one too long. Toggling makes it choose again.

When data is stuck but bars look fine. Occasionally the data connection gets into a bad state, showing signal but not loading anything. Reconnecting often clears it.

When the network type is stuck. If your phone stays on 4G after you walk into an area with good 5G, a toggle may move it up. Our guide on why your phone keeps dropping from 5G to 4G explains why it switches.

After travel. When you land in a new country or cross a border, a toggle can help the phone find a partner network.

When it does not help

  • The area simply has weak coverage. If the nearest mast is far away or blocked by buildings, a toggle cannot change that.
  • The cell is congested. If everyone around you is using the same cell, reconnecting puts you back in the same queue.
  • There is a network outage. If a mast is down, you will reconnect to the same weak alternative, or to nothing.
  • The problem is your SIM or phone. A damaged SIM or a software bug needs a different fix.

How to tell whether it worked

Bars are a rough guide. A better way is to compare the actual readings before and after:

  1. Before toggling, note your signal strength in dBm, network type, band and cell ID.
  2. Turn airplane mode on, wait about ten seconds, and turn it off.
  3. Wait for the phone to reconnect fully.
  4. Check the same readings again.

If the cell ID changed and the signal is stronger, the phone found a better cell. If the cell is the same and the signal is the same, the trick did nothing, and the problem is coverage. Our guide to LTE bands and cell IDs explains what those readings mean, and how to check your real signal strength on Android shows where to find them.

Other things to try if airplane mode does not help

  1. Restart the phone. It does the same as airplane mode and also clears other glitches.
  2. Check the preferred network type. On most phones, search Settings for "network mode" or "preferred network type". Make sure it allows 5G or 4G, not only older networks.
  3. Remove and reinsert the SIM. Do this with the phone off.
  4. Update the phone. Updates sometimes include modem and carrier fixes.
  5. Reset network settings. On most phones, search Settings for "reset network". This clears saved Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth pairings too, so have your Wi-Fi passwords ready.
  6. Move. Walking a few metres, or to a window, often helps more than any setting.

If calls are dropping too, our guide on why calls drop goes through the causes.

Should you toggle it often?

There is no harm in the airplane mode signal trick when you need it. It does not damage the phone or the SIM. Doing it every few minutes will not improve anything, though, because the phone already searches for better cells by itself. Use it as a quick reset when something seems stuck, not as a habit.

How CellRadar helps

CellRadar shows your live mobile signal in dBm with network type, carrier, band and cell ID, so you can check whether a toggle actually moved you to a better cell. An optional live readout in the notification bar lets you watch the change as it happens. It does not change your signal; it shows you whether the trick worked.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I leave airplane mode on?

About ten seconds is usually enough for the phone to fully disconnect. Longer does not help.

Is airplane mode the same as restarting?

For the mobile connection, it has a similar effect. A full restart also clears other software glitches, so try it if the toggle does not help.

Does airplane mode reset my network settings?

No. It only turns radios off and on. Your saved Wi-Fi networks and settings stay as they are.

Why do I get more bars after toggling airplane mode?

Your phone may have connected to a stronger cell, or the bars may simply have refreshed. Check the dBm reading to see whether the signal really improved.
