Why you should turn off battery saver before gaming

You should turn off battery saver before gaming because it usually limits how fast the processor can run and often caps the screen at 60 Hz. Both make games less smooth, and on weaker phones the difference can be large. If you have searched for "battery saver lag games", this is very often the cause: the phone is doing exactly what battery saver asks, which is to save power instead of performing.

What battery saver actually changes

Battery saver, sometimes called power saving mode or low power mode, trades performance for longer battery life. The exact changes vary by phone, but commonly include:

  • Limiting processor speed. The chip is held back from its highest speeds.
  • Capping refresh rate. A 90 Hz or 120 Hz screen may be locked to 60 Hz.
  • Restricting background activity. Apps may be stopped from syncing or refreshing in the background.
  • Reducing visual effects. Animations may be shortened or turned off.
  • Turning on dark theme on some phones.
  • Lowering screen brightness or shortening the screen timeout.

Most of these are fine for messaging and browsing. For games, the processor limit and the refresh rate cap hit hardest.

Signs of battery saver lag: games that stutter quietly

  • Lower frame rates, especially in busy scenes.
  • Stutter when many players or effects are on screen.
  • A game that feels less smooth than usual, even though nothing else has changed.
  • A 120 Hz phone that suddenly feels like a 60 Hz one.

Because the change is quiet, many players do not realise battery saver is on. It may have switched on automatically at a set battery percentage earlier in the day.

How to check and turn it off

  1. Swipe down to open Quick Settings and look for a Battery saver or Power saving tile.
  2. If it is highlighted, tap it to turn it off.
  3. For more control, open Settings and search for "Battery saver".
  4. Check whether it is set to turn on automatically at a certain percentage. You may want to lower that threshold or turn it off on gaming days.

Some phones have several power modes, such as "Optimised", "Balanced" or "Performance". If yours does, look for these in battery settings too, as a stricter mode may limit games even when battery saver itself is off.

What about adaptive battery?

Adaptive battery is a different feature. It learns which apps you use and limits background activity for ones you rarely open. It does not usually slow down the game you are playing in front of you. You can leave it on.

What if your battery is already low?

Sometimes you want to play but the battery is low. Rather than putting up with battery saver lag, games can be stretched further in other ways. Try this instead:

  1. Turn battery saver off.
  2. Lower the game's graphics, starting with frame rate and shadows.
  3. Lower screen brightness a little.
  4. Set the display to 60 Hz manually if the game does not benefit from a higher rate.
  5. Turn off Bluetooth and location if you are not using them.

This gives you more control. You decide what to trade, rather than letting battery saver hold back the processor.

Battery saver and online play

Battery saver may also restrict background data and sync for some apps. Games in the foreground are usually not affected, but it is one more reason to switch it off before ranked matches. Data Saver, a separate setting, can have a bigger effect on how apps use mobile data. Read is Data Saver causing lag in your online games? for details.

Make it a pre-game habit

Battery saver is one of the most common hidden causes of stutter, and it takes two seconds to check. Add it to your routine along with heat, Do Not Disturb and your network, as in our two-minute pre-game checklist. Checking it first is the quickest way to rule out battery saver lag. Games that stutter for no clear reason are very often running under it.

Will turning off battery saver drain my battery faster?

Yes, a little. That is the trade-off. Games will use more power at full speed. If you want to protect battery health, keeping the phone cool and avoiding long sessions while charging matter more than keeping battery saver on.

How CyberBoost helps you catch it

CyberBoost cannot change battery saver for you, and it does not try to. Its eight pre-game checks include power saving, and each check has a one-tap link to the right setting so you can switch it off yourself. During play, the live HUD shows refresh rate and CPU clock, which makes a battery saver cap easy to spot.

Frequently asked questions

Does battery saver reduce FPS?

It often does, because it limits processor speed and may cap the screen refresh rate. The effect is bigger on weaker phones.

Why did battery saver turn on by itself?

Many phones turn it on automatically at a set battery level. You can change or turn off that threshold in battery settings.

Is it bad to game with battery saver on?

It is not harmful, just slower. You will usually get a smoother game by turning it off and lowering graphics instead.

Does battery saver affect ping?

It usually does not change ping for the game you are playing. It mainly affects processor speed, screen refresh rate and background apps.
