How to crop PDF pages and trim margins
To crop a PDF, open it in a crop tool, drag the frame inwards until only the part you want is inside it, apply it to one page or all of them, and save a new copy. It is the quickest way to remove wide white margins, scanner shadows or a cluttered edge. One thing surprises most people: cropping usually hides the trimmed area rather than deleting it.
What does it mean to crop a PDF?
Cropping a PDF sets a new visible window on each page. Everything outside that window stops being shown or printed. In most cases the page content itself is not changed, which is why good crop tools can describe themselves as non-destructive: you can widen the frame again later and the hidden parts reappear.
That makes cropping safe for layout jobs and unsafe for privacy jobs. More on that below.
When cropping helps
- Reading on a phone. Academic papers and books often have generous margins. Trimming them makes the text larger on a small screen without zooming.
- Cleaning up scans. Phone scans and photocopies often have a grey or black border, a bit of the table, or your thumb at the edge.
- Cutting out one part of a page. A receipt photographed on a big sheet, or one chart you want to share from a report.
- Matching pages. When a merged file has pages with different amounts of white space, cropping them to a similar frame makes the document look consistent.
How to crop PDF pages, step by step
- Open the PDF in a crop tool and go to a typical page.
- Drag the edges or corners of the frame inwards until only the content you want is inside.
- Leave a small gap around the text. Cropping right up to the letters looks cramped and can clip descenders like "g" and "y".
- Decide whether the crop applies to the current page or to every page.
- If you choose every page, scroll through and check pages with wider content, such as tables or full-width images.
- Save as a new file and reopen it to confirm the result.
Should you crop every page the same way?
For a book or a report with a consistent layout, one crop for all pages is fast and keeps the document tidy. Two common exceptions:
- Odd and even pages. Scanned books often have the binding margin on alternate sides. A single crop may trim text on one side. Check a left-hand and a right-hand page.
- Mixed content. A landscape table or a fold-out diagram may need its own crop, or none at all.
If your pages are wildly different sizes, cropping alone will not fix it. Resizing them to one standard size is a better first step. Our guide to resizing PDF pages to A4 or Letter explains the difference.
Is cropped content really removed?
Usually not. Because a crop only changes the visible window, the trimmed text and images often stay in the file. Someone with the right tool can widen the frame again, or copy the hidden text out.
This matters if you crop to hide something private, such as an account number at the edge of a statement. For that, you need redaction, which removes the content for real. Read how to redact a PDF properly before you share anything sensitive.
Does cropping make the file smaller?
Not much, if at all. Since the hidden content is usually still inside, the file size barely changes. If size is the goal, compress the PDF instead. Our post on compressing a PDF without losing quality covers that.
Cropping versus trimming at the scanning stage
If you are still scanning, it is better to frame the page well when you take the photo. Scanner apps can usually detect the page edges and straighten them. Cropping afterwards is for files you received, or for scans you have already made.
Common mistakes
- Cropping too tightly so that page numbers or footnotes disappear.
- Applying one crop to all pages without checking a page with a wide table.
- Using crop for privacy instead of redaction.
- Cropping a signed document, which changes the file and can make a digital signature show as invalid.
Cropping pages with PDF Burrow
PDF Burrow includes a Crop / Trim Pages tool: you drag the frame on the page, see the result live, and the change is non-destructive. Your file is processed on the phone and not uploaded. For pages that need a standard size instead, there is a separate Resize Pages tool.
Frequently asked questions
Can I undo a crop after saving?
Often yes, because the trimmed area is usually still in the file. Open the cropped PDF in a crop tool and drag the frame back out. Keeping the original file is still the safest undo.
Why does my cropped PDF look uncropped in another app?
PDFs can store more than one page boundary, and a few viewers show a different one. Most common readers respect the crop. If one does not, try another viewer or print the file to a new PDF.
Can I crop just one page of a PDF?
Yes. Choose the option to apply the crop to the current page only, and the other pages keep their original frame.
Will cropping change how the PDF prints?
Yes. The printer only receives the visible area, so the cropped page may be scaled up to fill the paper. Check the print preview if you want the original size.
