How to find a screenshot by date

To find a screenshot by date, open your Screenshots album or folder, sort it by date and jump to the month you remember. On many phones the file name also contains the date and time it was taken, which you can search for. If you also remember one word from the image, combining a date with that word is usually the fastest route of all.

How Android records when a screenshot was taken

There are usually two clues to a screenshot's date.

  • The file name. Many phones name screenshots with the date and time, in a pattern like "Screenshot_20261014-093512". The exact format varies by brand, but the year, month and day are often in there.
  • The file's date information. Your phone stores the date the file was created or last changed. Gallery and file apps use this to sort and group images.

Screenshots usually carry less hidden information than camera photos. They normally do not store a location, so you cannot find them by place the way you might find a holiday photo.

This is the quickest way to find a screenshot by date when you know roughly when you took it.

  1. Open your phone's gallery or photos app.
  2. Go to the albums view and open the Screenshots album, so camera photos do not get in the way.
  3. Scroll or use the scroll bar, which often shows the month and year as you drag.
  4. Stop at the month you remember and look through the screenshots from that period.

Some gallery apps also let you search for a month or a year as a word. Try typing "March 2026" in the search box and see what happens.

Method 2: sort in a file manager

A file manager gives you more control than a gallery.

  1. Open your phone's files app.
  2. Find the Screenshots folder. It is often inside Pictures or DCIM, and our guide to where screenshots are saved on Android explains the usual places.
  3. Change the sort order to date, newest or oldest first.
  4. If the app has a search box, type part of the date as it appears in file names, such as "202610" for October 2026.

Method 3: anchor to an event

Most people do not remember dates. They remember events. Use that.

  • Was it before or after a trip, a move or a new job?
  • Was it around a birthday, a payday or a public holiday?
  • Was it the day you ordered something you can check in your email?

Find a photo or message from that event, note its date, then look at screenshots from the same week.

Why screenshot dates are sometimes wrong

If a screenshot seems to be missing from the right month, one of these is often the cause.

  • Copied or restored files. Moving screenshots to a new phone, or restoring them from a backup, can reset the file date to the day of the copy. The date in the file name usually stays correct.
  • Images received in chats. A screenshot someone sent you is dated when you saved or received it, not when they took it.
  • Edited copies. Cropping or marking up a screenshot can create a new file with today's date.
  • Downloads. Images saved from a browser are dated when you downloaded them.

When dates disagree, trust the date in the original file name if there is one.

Find a screenshot by date and a word together

A date range on its own may still leave you with dozens of screenshots. Add a word and the list shrinks fast. "Something from the bank in June" is a far better search than "June". Our search tips for when you only remember one word explain how to choose that word, and how to find an old screenshot fast covers other shortcuts.

Keep dates useful in future

  1. Avoid renaming files in a way that removes the date, unless your app stores names separately.
  2. When moving to a new phone, use a method that keeps original file dates where you can.
  3. For screenshots that matter, add the date to the name or a tag, such as "rent March 2026".
  4. Delete edited duplicates once you have the version you need, so you do not see the same image twice under two dates.

These habits make it much easier to find a screenshot by date the next time you need one.

How Screenshot Brain helps

Screenshot Brain lets you filter results by date and time as well as by text, links and category. So you can type a word you remember, such as a store name, and narrow it to the week or month you think it happened. The text is read on your phone, so the search works across your whole screenshot library.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my screenshot showing the wrong date?

It may have been copied, restored from a backup or edited, which can change the file date. Check the date in the file name, which usually reflects when it was taken.

Can I find a screenshot by the time of day?

Yes, if your file manager or screenshot app shows times or lets you filter by time. The file name on many phones includes the time too.

Do screenshots store a location like photos do?

Usually not. Screenshots normally do not include location data, so date, text and tags are the main ways to find them.

How do I find a screenshot someone sent me last year?

Look in the chat where it was sent, or in the folder your messaging app saves images to. The date on your phone will be when you received it.
