What does flattening a PDF mean, and when should you do it?

Flattening a PDF means merging everything that sits on top of the page, such as form answers, signatures, comments and stamps, into the page itself. After you flatten a PDF, those items become a fixed part of the page. They cannot be moved, edited or deleted separately, and they look the same in every PDF reader.

Layers: why a PDF needs flattening at all

A PDF page can carry extra layers on top of its basic content:

  • Form fields, the interactive boxes you type into.
  • Annotations, such as highlights, sticky notes, drawings and stamps.
  • Signatures placed as images or annotations.
  • Watermarks and added text, depending on how they were applied.

These layers are useful while you are working, because you can change them. But they also cause problems when you send a finished document. Some readers display them differently, some hide them, and anyone can move or delete them. Flattening fixes them in place.

When should you flatten a PDF?

Flatten when the document is final and you want it to stay exactly as it is:

  • After filling in a form, so your answers cannot be changed and appear in every app.
  • After signing, so your signature cannot be dragged off or deleted easily.
  • Before printing, because some printers and print services ignore form fields and annotations.
  • After adding a watermark or stamp, so it is part of the page rather than a removable layer.
  • When merging forms, because fields with the same names in different files can clash.
  • For archiving, so the record looks the same years from now.

When you should not flatten

Flattening cannot be undone in the flattened file, so think first:

  • If the recipient needs to process the form data. Some organisations read answers from form fields automatically. A flattened form turns the answers into plain page content, which they cannot extract the same way. Check their instructions.
  • If someone else still needs to fill or sign. Flatten only after the last person has finished.
  • If you are still editing. Keep an unflattened copy so you can make changes later.
  • If the PDF relies on comments for review. Flattened comments become part of the page and can no longer be replied to or resolved.

How to flatten a PDF on your phone

  1. Finish all your edits, form answers and signatures first.
  2. Save a copy of the unflattened file, in case you need to change something later.
  3. Open the PDF in a flatten tool.
  4. Apply flattening and save as a new file.
  5. Open the result and check that your answers, signature and stamps all appear.
  6. Tap a form field to confirm it is no longer editable.

Flattening and security: what it does not do

Flattening is often confused with redaction or protection. It is neither.

  • It does not remove hidden text. If you drew a black box over a word, flattening fixes the box in place, but the text underneath may still be copyable. To remove information, use a proper redaction tool. See how to redact a PDF properly.
  • It does not stop all editing. A flattened PDF can still be edited with a PDF editor, like any other page content. It just makes casual changes harder.
  • It does not add a password. Use password protection if you want to stop people opening the file.

A typical form workflow

  1. Fill in the fields. See how to fill PDF forms on Android.
  2. Sign the document. See how to sign a PDF on your phone.
  3. Add a stamp or watermark if needed. See how to add a watermark to a PDF.
  4. Flatten.
  5. Compress if the file is large, then send.

Does flattening change file size?

It can go either way. Removing interactive fields can make a file slightly smaller. Turning complex annotations into page content can sometimes make it slightly larger. In most everyday cases the change is small.

Flattening with PDF Burrow

PDF Burrow has a Flatten PDF tool that locks in forms, annotations, watermarks and signatures permanently. It works on your phone, so the document is not uploaded. It pairs naturally with Fill Forms, Sign PDF and Add Watermark for a finished, fixed document.

Frequently asked questions

Can I unflatten a PDF?

No. Once a PDF is flattened, the fields and annotations are part of the page. Keep an unflattened copy if you think you might need to change something.

Will flattening affect the quality of my PDF?

Usually not. Text and images stay sharp. Some tools convert pages to images when flattening, which can soften text, so check the result.

Why does my signed PDF look blank in another app?

The signature or form answers may be stored as annotations or fields that the other app does not display. Flattening before sending makes them part of the page so they always appear.

Does flattening make a PDF smaller?

Sometimes slightly, because interactive fields are removed. It is not a substitute for compression if you need a much smaller file.
