How to hide private screenshots on Android

The safest way to hide screenshots on Android is to move them into a locked folder that needs your PIN, pattern or fingerprint to open. Many phones have a secure folder built in, Google Photos offers a Locked Folder, and some apps provide their own private space. Simply hiding a file from the gallery is not the same as locking it, so choose the option that matches how private the screenshot really is.

Hiding, locking and encrypting: what is the difference?

These words get mixed up, but they mean different things.

  • Hiding means a screenshot no longer appears in the gallery. Anyone who knows where to look, or uses a file manager, may still find it.
  • Locking means the screenshot sits behind your PIN, pattern, password or fingerprint. Someone holding your unlocked phone still cannot open it without that extra step.
  • Encrypting means the file itself is scrambled so it cannot be read without a key. Locked folders often use encryption behind the scenes.

For a meme you would rather not show, hiding is enough. For a passport photo or bank screenshot, you want locking at least.

Option 1: your phone's built-in secure folder

Many Android phones include a secure or private folder, sometimes called a secure folder, private safe or something similar. The name and location differ by brand.

  1. On most phones, open Settings and search for "secure folder", "private" or "safe".
  2. Set it up with a PIN, pattern or fingerprint. Use a code that is different from your normal lock screen if the option exists.
  3. Open your gallery, select the screenshots you want to protect and look for a "move to secure folder" or similar option.
  4. Check that the screenshots have left the main gallery.

Newer versions of Android also offer a feature called Private space on some phones, which keeps a separate set of apps and files behind its own lock.

Option 2: Google Photos Locked Folder

If you use Google Photos, its Locked Folder keeps selected photos and screenshots behind your phone's screen lock.

  1. Open Google Photos and look for Locked Folder, usually in the Library or Collections area.
  2. Follow the setup steps.
  3. Select screenshots and choose the option to move them to the Locked Folder.

Items in a Locked Folder are kept out of the main photo grid, search results and other apps. Read the on-screen notes about backup carefully, because how Locked Folder items are backed up has differed between versions and settings.

Option 3: an app with its own private folder

Some gallery and screenshot apps include their own locked area. This can be convenient if that app is where you already organise your screenshots, because you do not have to switch between apps to find a hidden image.

Before you rely on one, check two things:

  • What happens to the locked items if you uninstall the app? In some cases they are deleted with it.
  • Can you make a backup of the locked items, and is that backup protected too?

What about the .nomedia trick?

You may read about creating a folder with a file called ".nomedia" inside it. This tells most gallery apps not to show the images in that folder. It does hide screenshots on Android galleries, but it does not lock them. Anyone with a file manager can still open them. Treat it as tidying, not security.

Things to check after you hide screenshots on Android

  1. Delete the originals. Some methods copy rather than move. Make sure the screenshot is gone from the main gallery and from any "recently deleted" bin.
  2. Check cloud backups. A screenshot may already have been backed up before you hid it. Look in your cloud photos and remove it there too if needed.
  3. Check other apps. Messaging apps may still hold a copy if you ever sent or received the image.
  4. Remember your code. If you forget the PIN for a separate locked folder, recovery can be difficult or impossible.

Which screenshots deserve a locked folder?

Not everything needs protection, and you do not need to hide screenshots on Android by the hundred. Focus on the images that would cause real harm if someone else saw them: ID documents, bank and card details, recovery codes, medical letters and private conversations. Our guides to bank details in screenshots and the hidden privacy risks in your screenshots help you decide. How Screenshot Brain helps

Screenshot Brain includes a private folder where you can lock sensitive screenshots with your PIN or fingerprint, inside the same app you use to search and sort them. It has no account and no cloud sync, and if you want a copy, its encrypted backups are made only when you ask and are protected with your own passphrase.

Frequently asked questions

Can I hide screenshots without an app?

Yes. Many phones have a built-in secure folder, and Google Photos has a Locked Folder. Look in your phone's settings or your photos app.

Are hidden screenshots still backed up to the cloud?

They might be, especially if they were backed up before you hid them. Check your cloud photo library and remove any copies you do not want stored there.

What happens if I forget my locked folder PIN?

It depends on the feature. Some let you reset it with your account, others do not. Choose a code you will remember, and keep a separate backup of anything important.

Is hiding a screenshot the same as deleting it?

No. Hiding keeps the file on your phone, just out of view. Deleting removes it, usually after a short stay in a recycle bin.
