12 screenshot collections worth making
The most useful screenshot collections match the things you look up again: receipts, trips, codes, recipes, work details and ideas you want to come back to. A collection is simply a named group of screenshots that belong together. Start with a handful of the twelve below, not all of them, and add more only when a pile keeps growing.
Why bother with screenshot collections?
A gallery sorts images by date. That works for holiday photos, but screenshots are different. You rarely think "I need the image from 14 March". You think "I need the hotel booking" or "where is that soup recipe". Collections let you jump to a topic instead of scrolling through time.
They also make clean-ups easier. When a trip is over, you can review the whole Travel collection at once and delete what you no longer need.
12 collections to consider
Pick the screenshot collections that match how you actually use your phone. You do not need all twelve.
1. Receipts
Order confirmations, digital receipts and photos of paper ones. This is the collection you will thank yourself for when an item breaks or a refund goes missing.
2. Travel
Boarding passes, hotel confirmations, train tickets, car hire details and the screenshot of the map to your accommodation. Keep one trip together, then clear it a few months after you get home.
3. Returns and warranties
A separate group for anything with a deadline: return windows, warranty cards and proof of purchase for expensive items. Seeing them in one place reminds you that time is running out.
4. Coupons and codes
Discount codes, gift card numbers, loyalty offers and referral codes. Most expire, so this is the collection to prune most often.
5. Payments
Proof of rent, deposits and transfers to friends. Keep the reference number visible in every image.
6. Recipes
Ingredient lists and methods from websites, cookbooks and videos. Add the source so you can credit the creator or find the full version.
7. Wishlist
Products you are thinking about buying, with the price and store visible. A wishlist collection turns impulse buys into "maybe later" decisions.
8. Study notes
Lecture slides, timetable changes, assignment briefs and exam dates. Split by subject if you study more than two or three.
9. Work
Meeting links and IDs, error messages for IT, parking details and expense receipts. Check your employer's rules before saving anything confidential on a personal phone.
10. Home and appliances
Model and serial numbers, boiler settings, meter readings, bin collection days and the instructions for that one tricky remote. These are easy to forget and painful to look up.
11. Health
Appointment confirmations, vaccination records and photos of medicine boxes with expiry dates. This is personal information, so keep it somewhere locked.
12. Gift ideas
Things people mention they like, sizes, favourite brands. Add the person's name as a tag, and birthdays become much easier.
How to set up collections that last
A few rules stop collections from turning into a second messy gallery.
- Start with three to five collections you know you need, such as Receipts, Travel and Codes.
- Use short, plain names. "Travel" beats "Trips & holidays 2026 misc".
- Add screenshots to a collection when you take them, or during a weekly review.
- Use tags for detail inside a collection, such as a person's name or a project.
- Review each collection once a month and delete anything that has expired or no longer matters.
- Retire a collection when a phase of life ends, such as finishing a course.
Our guide to tagging and renaming screenshots shows how tags and collections work together. If you want to go deeper on two of the ideas above, read turning recipe screenshots into a cookbook and building a shopping wishlist from screenshots. Students can find a full workflow in using screenshots as study notes.
Collections or folders?
Folders store a file in one place. A collection is often a view, so one screenshot can sit in more than one group. A hotel receipt might belong in both Travel and Receipts. If your app lets you do this, use it. If not, pick the collection you are most likely to search first.
How Screenshot Brain handles screenshot collections
In Screenshot Brain, Receipts, Travel, Shopping and Work collections sort themselves as the app reads the text in your screenshots on your phone. You can make your own collections for anything else on this list, star favourites, rename items and add tags. Search still works across everything, so a collection is a shortcut, not a wall.
Frequently asked questions
How many screenshot collections should I have?
Most people manage well with five to eight. If you have more than that, some are probably small enough to be tags inside a bigger collection.
Can one screenshot be in two collections?
It depends on the app. Many screenshot organisers treat collections as groups, so the same image can appear in several of them without making a copy.
Should I delete screenshots once they are in a collection?
No. The collection is where they live. Delete them only when they have expired or you are sure you will not need them again.
Which collection should I start with?
Start with Receipts. It saves the most time and money, because proof of purchase is what you need when something goes wrong.
