Screenshot not working on Android? Common causes and fixes
If your screenshot is not working on Android, the most likely reason is that the app on screen blocks screenshots on purpose, which banking apps, private browsing tabs and some streaming apps do. Other common causes are pressing the buttons with the wrong timing, a full storage, a work or school policy, or a temporary glitch that a restart fixes. Work through the checks below in order and you will usually find the cause in a few minutes.
First, what exactly happens?
The symptom points to the cause, so notice what you see.
- A message saying screenshots are not allowed. The app or a device policy is blocking it.
- The screenshot saves, but it is black. The app is protecting what is on screen, often a video or a payment page.
- Nothing happens at all. The buttons may be mistimed, or a setting or glitch is getting in the way.
- The screen locks or the volume bar appears. You pressed one button slightly before the other.
- An error about storage. The phone has no room to save the image.
Why is my screenshot not working in some apps?
Android lets apps mark their screens as secure. On a secure screen, screenshots and screen recordings are blocked, or they come out black. This is deliberate and protects sensitive information.
Apps that commonly do this include:
- Banking, payment and investment apps.
- Private or incognito tabs in many browsers.
- Streaming apps showing protected films and shows.
- Password managers and some messaging features, such as disappearing photos.
There is no safe way around this inside the app, and it is not a fault with your phone. If you need a record, look for the app's own export, download or share option, such as a downloadable statement or receipt.
Fixes to try when your screenshot is not working
- Check the button timing. Press Power and Volume Down at exactly the same moment, then release quickly. Holding too long can open other menus.
- Try another method. Use the screenshot tile in quick settings, a gesture, Google Assistant or the Accessibility Menu. If these work, the buttons are the problem. Our guide on how to take a screenshot on any Android phone lists the options.
- Test in a different app. Take a screenshot of your home screen or settings. If that works, the original app is blocking it.
- Check your storage. On most phones, open Settings and search for "Storage". If it is almost full, free some space and try again.
- Restart the phone. A restart clears temporary glitches in the system interface, which is responsible for screenshots.
- Check gesture and screenshot settings. On most phones, open Settings and search for "screenshot". Make sure gestures you rely on are turned on.
- Check for a device policy. Work phones, school phones and phones with a work profile can block screenshots through management settings. Ask your IT team if you think this applies.
- Look at recently installed apps. A screen-dimming, overlay or automation app can sometimes interfere. Try disabling recent installs one by one, or start the phone in safe mode to test without them.
- Update the phone. On most phones, open Settings and search for "System update". Updates often fix bugs in system features.
When the buttons themselves are the problem
If screenshots work through quick settings or gestures but not with the buttons, one of the buttons may be worn or stuck. Test each button on its own: does Power lock the screen? Does Volume Down change the volume? If one does not respond, use another screenshot method until it is repaired.
Screenshots that save but cannot be found
Sometimes the screenshot does work, but you cannot find it afterwards. It may be in a different folder than you expected, or your gallery may hide some folders. See where screenshots are saved on Android to track them down. If you have many, it can also help to search the text inside your screenshots rather than scrolling.
Is it safe to try to get around blocked screenshots?
Avoid apps or tricks that claim to bypass screenshot blocking. They often need wide permissions, and the screens they target are usually blocked for good reasons, such as protecting your bank details. Use the app's own export features instead.
How Screenshot Brain helps
Screenshot Brain cannot unblock screens that apps protect, and it does not take screenshots itself. What it does is look after the ones you take: new screenshots arrive in a Smart Inbox, the text in each is read on your phone so you can search for it, and its cleaner finds duplicates and large files if storage is the reason screenshots fail to save.
Frequently asked questions
Why are my screenshots coming out black?
The app on screen is protecting its content, which is common with streaming video and payment screens. This is intentional and cannot be fixed from your side.
Why does it say screenshots are not allowed by my organisation?
Your phone or its work profile is managed by an employer or school, and the policy blocks screenshots. Only the people who manage the device can change that.
Can I take a screenshot in incognito mode?
Many browsers block screenshots in private tabs by default. Some browsers offer a setting to allow it, but think about why you are browsing privately before turning it on.
Screenshot not working after an update: what can I do?
Restart the phone first, then check your screenshot and gesture settings, because updates sometimes reset them. If it still fails, use quick settings or the Accessibility Menu until the next update.
