Stop losing coupon codes you screenshotted
A coupon code screenshot is only useful if you can find it at the checkout and it has not already expired. The fix is to capture the code together with its terms, keep all codes in one group, and search for them by the shop name or a word like "off" when you need one. A quick monthly clear-out of expired codes keeps the list short.
Why coupon codes get lost
Coupon codes arrive everywhere: in emails, on social posts, in app banners, from friends in chats and on receipts. Screenshotting them is the fastest way to save one. But codes have a few habits that make them easy to lose.
- They look like every other screenshot. A banner with a code is just one more thumbnail.
- The code itself is meaningless. A random string of letters is hard to remember and hard to search for.
- They expire quietly. There is no warning when a code stops working.
- You need them at an awkward moment. At the checkout, with a basket waiting and a timer running.
What to capture in a coupon code screenshot
Before you take the screenshot, check that the screen shows more than just the code.
- The code, clear and readable.
- The shop name, so you can search by it later.
- The discount, such as a percentage or an amount off.
- The expiry date, if there is one.
- The conditions, such as a minimum spend, excluded items, first order only or app only.
If the terms are on a different screen, take two screenshots or a scrolling one. Many failed codes turn out to have a condition that was in the small print.
How to keep coupon codes in one place
- Screenshot the code and its terms together. See the checklist above.
- Name it with the shop and the deal. For example, "Bookshop, 15% off, ends end of month".
- Put it in a Coupons or Shopping group. One place to check before you pay.
- Note the expiry. If a code is valuable, set a reminder a few days before it ends.
- Clear out expired codes monthly. Delete anything past its date so the group only shows codes you can use.
How to find a code at the checkout
When you are about to pay and remember you had a code, try these searches:
- The shop's name. The fastest route if you captured it.
- Words that appear in most coupons, such as "code", "off", "promo", "voucher" or "discount".
- The percentage sign or the amount, if you remember the deal.
- The month, with a date filter, if you remember roughly when you saved it.
If you often search with very little to go on, screenshot search tips has more ideas.
Copying the code without mistakes
Typing a code from a screenshot is where small errors creep in. The letter O and the number 0 look alike, and so do the letter I, the letter l and the number 1. A few tips:
- Zoom in on the code before you type it.
- Copy it with a text-recognition tool rather than typing, then compare it with the image. See how to copy text from a screenshot.
- Remember that many codes are not case-sensitive, but some are.
- Remove any spaces before or after the code when you paste it.
Codes from friends and personal codes
Some codes are shared by friends, such as referral codes. Others are personal and linked to your account, like a birthday discount. Personal codes may only work when you are signed in, so a screenshot is mainly a reminder that the offer exists.
Be careful when sharing your own codes in screenshots. The same image might show your email address, name or account details. Cover anything that is not needed before you send it.
When a code does not work
- Check the expiry date and conditions in your screenshot.
- Make sure the basket meets any minimum spend and excludes items the code does not cover.
- Retype the code, watching for lookalike characters.
- Check whether it only works in the app or only on the website.
- If it still fails, contact the shop with the screenshot. Some will honour a valid offer.
Codes are part of a wider shopping system
Coupons work best alongside your other shopping screenshots, such as wishlists and receipts. If you save products you want to buy later, a code for the same shop is easy to match. See building a shopping wishlist from screenshots.
How Screenshot Brain helps
Screenshot Brain gives coupon codes their own automatic label and puts shopping screenshots in a Shopping collection that sorts itself. Because it reads the text on your phone, you can search for the shop name or a word like "off" and see every matching coupon code screenshot. You can also rename items and add tags so the deals you care about are easy to spot.
Frequently asked questions
How long are coupon codes usually valid?
It varies widely, from a few hours to several months. Always check the expiry in the terms, and capture it in your screenshot.
Why does a coupon code work in the app but not on the website?
Some codes are restricted to one channel to encourage app use. The terms usually say so.
Can I use a code someone else screenshotted?
Public codes usually work for anyone. Personal and single-use codes are linked to one account and will not work for someone else.
Should I keep expired coupon screenshots?
No. They clutter search results and can lead you to try a code that will not work. Delete them during a monthly clear-out.
