How to find an order number you screenshotted weeks ago

To find an order number you screenshotted weeks ago, search your screenshots for the shop's name or any part of the number you remember, then narrow the results by the date you ordered. This works when your screenshots can be searched by their text. If it still does not turn up, the shop's emails, delivery texts and your bank statement can lead you back to it.

What does an order number look like?

An order number is the reference a shop gives each purchase. It is usually a mix of letters and numbers, often with a prefix such as a hash sign or a few letters, and sometimes split into groups with dashes. It might be labelled order number, order ID, reference, confirmation number or booking reference.

Knowing the label helps, because that word is usually printed right next to the number in the screenshot.

How to find an order number in your screenshots

Work through these steps in order. They help you find order numbers even when you remember very little.

  1. Search for the shop name. This is usually the easiest word to remember. If the shop uses a different trading name, try the brand you bought instead.
  2. Search for the label. Try "order", "reference" or "confirmation". On its own this gives many results, but combined with a date it narrows quickly.
  3. Search for part of the number. If a delivery text or email gave you the last few digits, search for those.
  4. Add a date filter. Narrow to the week you ordered. If you do not know the date, think about what else was happening, such as a sale, a birthday or a trip.
  5. Check the right category. Receipts and payments often sort into their own groups, which cuts out chats and memes.
  6. Open and zoom in. Once you find the screenshot, zoom in on the number before you copy or type it.

Why your search might miss it

If the screenshot is there but search cannot see it, one of these is usually the reason.

  • Lookalike characters. Text recognition can read the letter O as zero, the letter I as one, or S as five. If you are searching for the number itself, try just the digits you are sure about.
  • Tiny text. Order numbers are sometimes printed small, especially on mobile checkout pages.
  • Text in an image. Some confirmation pages show the number on a coloured banner, which is harder to read.
  • Different wording. The shop might call it a reference or a confirmation code rather than an order number.
  • It was never captured. You may have screenshotted the basket before checkout, not the confirmation afterwards.

Other places to find order numbers

If your screenshots do not have it, these sources often do.

  • Your email. Search your inbox and spam folder for the shop's name. Confirmation and dispatch emails nearly always include the number.
  • Delivery texts and tracking emails. Couriers sometimes show the shop's order number alongside their own tracking number.
  • Your account on the shop's site or app. Look for Orders or Order history.
  • Your bank or card statement. It will not show the order number, but it shows the date and amount, which support teams can often use to find the order.
  • The parcel itself. A delivery note or packing slip inside the box may print the number.

If you still cannot find it

Contact the shop anyway. Most support teams can find an order using other details, such as:

  • The email address or phone number you used.
  • The date and approximate amount.
  • The delivery address.
  • The last few digits of the card you paid with.

Have a screenshot of the payment ready if you have one. Our guide to keeping payment confirmation screenshots explains what to capture.

Make the next one easy to find

The best time to make an order number findable is when you place the order.

  1. Screenshot the confirmation page, not the basket.
  2. Check that the number is visible and readable before you leave the page.
  3. Name the screenshot with the shop and the item.
  4. Keep it in a Receipts group.
  5. If there is a return deadline, set a reminder at the same time.

How Screenshot Brain helps

Screenshot Brain reads the text in your screenshots on your phone, so you can type a store name or part of an order number and see the screenshots that contain it. Filters let you narrow by date, category or time, and receipts and payments get their own automatic labels, so the right screenshot is usually near the top.

Frequently asked questions

Is the order number the same as the tracking number?

No. The order number comes from the shop, while the tracking number comes from the delivery company. Some messages show both, so check the label next to each.

What if I only remember the amount I paid?

Search for the amount as it would appear, with or without the currency symbol. Combine it with a date filter to narrow the results.

Why does the number I copied not work on the shop's site?

A character may have been misread or copied with a space. Compare it with the screenshot and check for lookalikes such as O and 0.

Can a shop find my order without the number?

Usually, yes. Your email address, the order date and the amount are often enough for support to locate it.
