Free up phone storage by cleaning your screenshots

Cleaning your screenshots is one of the quickest ways to free up space on a phone, because most of them were only useful for a moment. Start with large files and duplicates, then clear similar shots and old clutter. A screenshot cleaner speeds this up by finding those groups for you, so you only have to confirm what goes.

Check how much space you can win

Before you start deleting, find out whether screenshots are actually the problem.

  1. On most phones, open Settings and search for "Storage". You will see how much space each type of file uses, such as apps, images and videos.
  2. Open your files app or gallery and look for the Screenshots album or folder. Many show the number of items, and some show the total size.
  3. Compare the two. If images take up a lot of space and screenshots are a big part of your images, a clean-up will help.

If videos or a few large apps are using most of your space, deal with those first. Screenshots are usually small one by one, and their size only adds up because there are so many of them. We look at the numbers in how much storage your screenshots really use.

What is a screenshot cleaner?

A screenshot cleaner is a tool that scans your screenshots and groups the ones you probably do not need, such as exact copies, near-identical shots, very old images and unusually large files. Instead of looking at thousands of images one by one, you review a few groups and delete in bulk.

What to delete first

Not all clutter is equal. This order gives you the most space for the least effort.

  1. Large files. Long scrolling screenshots and screenshots of photos or videos are much bigger than a simple screen of text. A few of these can weigh as much as hundreds of ordinary ones.
  2. Exact duplicates. These are pure waste, as you already have the same image. See how to find and delete duplicate screenshots.
  3. Similar shots. Three screenshots of the same map or the same page, taken seconds apart. Keep the best one.
  4. Old, one-time screenshots. Parking spots, delivery tracking, codes you have already used, prices you already compared.
  5. Images saved by chat apps. Forwarded pictures and stickers can quietly fill a folder of their own.

How to clean your screenshots step by step

  1. Protect what matters. Before a big clean-up, make sure screenshots you must keep, such as receipts or warranties, are backed up or clearly marked.
  2. Sort by size. Delete the largest unwanted files first, so you see a real difference quickly.
  3. Clear duplicates and similar shots. Look at each group before you delete it.
  4. Sweep old clutter by month. Pick a month from last year and delete anything you no longer need. Repeat for a few months at a time.
  5. Check the recycle bin. Deleted items often sit in a bin for a while. Wait a few days, then decide whether to empty it.
  6. Check storage again. Look at the storage screen to see what you gained.

The recycle bin and your free space

Most gallery and cleaner apps do not delete files immediately. They move them to a recycle bin or trash so you can change your mind. That is a good safety net, but files in a bin generally still take up space until the bin removes them or you empty it.

If you need space right now, you can empty the bin after you have checked it. If you are not in a hurry, let it clear on its own schedule and keep the chance to undo. Read more in how a recycle bin helps when you delete by mistake.

Keep it from filling up again

A one-off clean-up helps for a while. A small habit keeps the space free.

  • Delete one-time screenshots as soon as you have used them.
  • Review new screenshots once a week instead of letting them pile up.
  • Use a screenshot cleaner every month or two to catch duplicates and large files.
  • Avoid saving the same image from chats more than once.

How Screenshot Brain helps

Screenshot Brain has a screenshot cleaner that finds duplicates, similar shots, old clutter and large files. Deleted items stay in its Recycle bin for 30 days, so a mistake is easy to undo. New screenshots arrive in a Smart Inbox, where you can keep what matters and delete clutter in one tap, which stops the pile from growing back.

Frequently asked questions

Will deleting screenshots make my phone faster?

Freeing storage can help if your phone was almost completely full, because the system needs some free space to work well. On a phone with plenty of space left, deleting screenshots will not make a noticeable difference to speed.

Is it safe to use a screenshot cleaner?

Yes, if you review each group before deleting and the app uses a recycle bin. Be careful with similar shots, as two screenshots can look alike but contain different details.

Why did my free space not change after deleting?

The files are probably sitting in a recycle bin or trash. Space is usually freed once the bin is emptied or its holding period ends.

Do screenshots in my cloud backup use phone storage?

Copies stored only online use your cloud storage, not your phone's. Files that are on the phone and backed up use both, so deleting from the phone may not free cloud space.
