Deleted a screenshot by mistake? How a recycle bin helps
If you deleted a screenshot by mistake, check the recycle bin straight away. Most gallery and screenshot apps move deleted items to a bin for a limited time instead of erasing them, so you can usually recover a deleted screenshot in a couple of taps. If it is not there, your backup or the chat where you sent it are the next places to look.
What is a recycle bin?
A recycle bin, sometimes called trash or bin, is a holding area for files you have deleted. The file is moved there rather than erased, and it stays until the bin's time limit runs out or you empty it yourself. Until then, you can restore it to where it was.
How long items stay depends on the app. Some keep them for a few weeks, and the period can differ between items that are backed up and items that are only on the phone. Check the bin's own screen, as it often says how many days are left.
How to recover a deleted screenshot from the bin
The steps are much the same in most apps.
- Open the app you used to delete the screenshot. This matters, because each app may have its own bin.
- Look for Bin, Trash, Recycle bin or Recently deleted. It is often in a menu, in the Library or Albums tab, or in settings.
- Find the screenshot. Items are usually sorted by when they were deleted, with the newest first.
- Select it and tap Restore.
- Check that it is back in your Screenshots album or folder.
If you deleted it in a files app rather than a gallery, check whether the files app has its own bin. Some do, and some delete straight away.
Not in the bin? Where else to look
If you still need to recover deleted screenshot files that are not in the bin, try these places in order.
- Your other apps' bins. If you use more than one gallery or screenshot app, each may have its own bin. Check them all.
- Your online backup. If your photos are backed up to an online account, the screenshot may still be there, or in that service's own bin. Sign in on the web or open the backup app and look.
- The chat you sent it to. If you shared the screenshot in a chat or email, open that conversation and save it again. Note that chat apps may compress images, so the copy can be a little less sharp.
- The person you sent it to. If you sent it to someone, they may still have it.
- The original source. If the screenshot was of an order, booking or message, the original may still exist in the app or email it came from.
- A computer. If you ever copied your phone's photos to a computer, look there.
What if it is gone for good?
Once a file has left the bin and is not in any backup, recovery is usually not realistic for most people. Modern Android phones encrypt their storage, so deleted data is not simply waiting to be scanned.
Be careful with apps or websites that promise to recover deleted photos. Many cannot do what they claim on a modern phone, and some ask for wide access to your files. If the screenshot was important, it is often quicker to recreate it from the original source.
How to make mistakes easy to undo next time
A few habits turn a lost screenshot into a minor annoyance.
- Delete to a bin, not permanently. Avoid tools and settings that skip the bin.
- Wait before emptying the bin. Give yourself a few days after a big clean-up before clearing it.
- Review before bulk deleting. Especially with similar screenshots, which can look the same but hold different details. See how to keep the best of similar screenshots.
- Back up the ones that matter. Receipts, warranties and important documents deserve a backup. If they contain private information, use an encrypted one, as explained in how to back up screenshots with encryption.
- Name and tag important screenshots. Named screenshots are less likely to be swept up in a clean-up by accident.
Do deleted screenshots still use space?
Usually, yes, while they are in the bin. That is the trade-off for being able to undo. If you are clearing space and are sure about what you deleted, you can empty the bin. If not, let it clear on its own. For more on clearing space safely, see how to free up storage by cleaning your screenshots.
How Screenshot Brain helps
Screenshot Brain has a screenshot cleaner for duplicates, similar shots, old clutter and large files, and the items you delete with it stay in its Recycle bin for 30 days. If you change your mind, you can restore them from there. For screenshots you cannot afford to lose, it can make an encrypted backup when you ask, protected with your own passphrase.
Frequently asked questions
How long do deleted screenshots stay in the bin?
It depends on the app. Many keep deleted items for a few weeks, and the bin screen usually shows how long each item has left.
Can I recover deleted screenshot files after emptying the bin?
Only if a copy exists elsewhere, such as in an online backup, a chat or on a computer. Once it has left the bin, the phone itself usually cannot bring it back.
Why is my deleted screenshot not in the bin?
You may have deleted it in a different app, or with a tool that deletes permanently. Some files apps also skip the bin entirely.
Does restoring a screenshot put it back in the same folder?
Usually, yes. Restored items normally return to the album or folder they came from.
