How to merge PDF files on your phone

To merge PDF files on your phone, open a merge tool, select the files you want to combine, drag them into the right order and save. You get one new PDF that contains every page, and your original files stay as they were. The whole job usually takes less than a minute.

When merging is the right answer

Merging is useful whenever someone asks for "one file". Common examples:

  • a job application that wants your CV, cover letter and certificates in a single PDF;
  • a visa or loan application with several scanned documents;
  • monthly bank statements you want to keep as one yearly record;
  • a report where each chapter was saved as a separate file;
  • a rental agreement where the signed pages arrived separately.

One file is easier for the other person to open, print and file. It also means nothing gets lost in a long email thread.

How to merge PDF files on Android

  1. Open your PDF app and choose the merge tool.
  2. Select the files. Most apps let you pick several at once from your phone's storage or downloads.
  3. Check the order. Drag each file up or down so the first document is at the top.
  4. Tap merge, or combine.
  5. Give the new file a clear name, such as "Visa application - Ali - 2026".
  6. Open the result and scroll through it once before you send it.

If a file you need is a photo rather than a PDF, convert it first. Our guide to combining photos into one PDF shows how.

How to merge PDFs in the right page order

Merging puts whole files one after another. Sometimes that is not enough. You might need page 3 of one file to sit between two pages of another, or you might want to drop a blank page.

The simplest way:

  1. Merge all the files first.
  2. Open the merged PDF in a page organiser.
  3. Drag individual pages into place, delete the ones you do not need and rotate any sideways scans.
  4. Save.

Working on one merged file is easier than trying to plan the perfect order before you start. The reorder, rotate or delete pages guide covers this step in more detail.

Why is my merged PDF so large?

A merged file is roughly the size of all its parts added together. If one of those parts is a high-resolution scan, the result can be bigger than an email or upload form allows.

Two ways to fix it:

  • Compress after merging. Compressing once at the end is quicker than compressing each file separately, and gives you one predictable result.
  • Rescan heavy pages. A page photographed at very high resolution can be larger than the rest of the document combined. Scanning it again with automatic clean-up often produces a much smaller page.

For hard limits, see how to get a PDF under 1 MB, 500 KB or 200 KB.

Problems you might hit when you merge PDF files

A file will not add. It may be password-protected. Open it with the password and save an unlocked copy first, if you have the right to do so.

Pages are different sizes. Mixing A4 and Letter, or scans and digital pages, can make the document look uneven. A resize tool can fit every page to the same paper size.

Form fields disappear or clash. When two files have fields with the same name, merging can confuse them. Fill and flatten forms before you merge.

Bookmarks are lost. Some merges keep each file's bookmarks and some do not. If navigation matters, add a table of contents after merging.

Make the merged file easy to read

A long merged document is easier to use with page numbers. Add them after merging, so they run from the first page to the last without restarting. The page numbers guide explains the options. A short first page that lists what is inside also helps the reader.

Merging PDFs with PDF Burrow

In PDF Burrow, the Merge PDF tool combines several PDF files into one document on your phone, without uploading them. You can then use Organize Pages to reorder, rotate or delete individual pages, Compress PDF to reduce the size, and Page Numbers to number the result. If some of your documents are photos, Image to PDF turns them into PDF pages first.

Frequently asked questions

Does merging PDFs reduce quality?

No. Merging copies the pages as they are, so text and images keep their original quality. Quality only changes if you compress the file afterwards.

Can I merge a PDF with a Word file?

Not directly in most apps. Convert or export the Word file to PDF first, then merge the two PDFs.

Is there a limit to how many files I can merge?

Phone apps are limited mainly by your phone's memory. Merging dozens of small files is usually fine, while several very large scans may be slow. Merge in smaller batches if the app struggles.

Can I undo a merge?

Your original files are not changed, so you can always start again. To pull pages back out of a merged file, use a page tool to select and save just the pages you want as a new PDF.
