How to track warranty dates on your phone

To track warranty dates on your phone, keep a screenshot or photo of the receipt, note the product's model and serial number, and set a reminder shortly before the warranty ends. That gives you the three things a repair claim usually needs: proof of purchase, proof of which product it is, and a date. A warranty tracker app can do the reminding for you, but the habit matters more than the tool.

What is a warranty?

A warranty is a promise from the manufacturer or seller to repair or replace a product if it develops a fault within a set period. It usually covers defects, not accidental damage or normal wear.

Warranties are different from return windows. A return window is a short period to send something back, often for any reason. A warranty lasts longer and only covers faults. Many products come with a warranty of a year or two, but the length varies by product, brand and country, so always check the paperwork.

What you need to make a warranty claim

When something breaks, you will usually be asked for some or all of these:

  • Proof of purchase. A receipt or invoice showing the date, the seller and the product.
  • The model number. This identifies the exact product.
  • The serial number. This identifies your specific unit, and some manufacturers check it against the sale date.
  • A description of the fault. Photos or a short video can help.
  • Registration details, if you registered the product with the manufacturer.

If you collect these when you buy the product, a future claim takes minutes instead of an afternoon of searching.

How to track warranty dates on your phone

  1. Save the receipt on the day you buy. Take a screenshot of the online order confirmation, or a photo of the paper receipt. See how to track paper receipts with a quick photo.
  2. Photograph the label. The model and serial number are usually on a sticker on the back or bottom of the product, or inside the battery or door compartment.
  3. Save the warranty terms. Screenshot the warranty page on the manufacturer's site or photograph the warranty card in the box.
  4. Work out the end date. Count from the purchase date unless the terms say otherwise.
  5. Set a reminder before it ends. A month before is a good point to check the product over and report anything that is not right.
  6. Keep everything together. Name the screenshots clearly, for example "Fridge receipt, warranty to" followed by the end date, and tag them "warranty".

Why a reminder before the end date helps

Most faults are noticed late. A small rattle, a battery that drains quickly or a button that sticks can become normal to you over time. A reminder shortly before the warranty ends prompts you to look again while the repair is still covered.

Use the reminder as a quick check:

  • Does everything still work as it should?
  • Are there small faults you have been putting up with?
  • Is the product due a service that the warranty requires?

Registering a product

Some manufacturers ask you to register the product, and a few only offer their full warranty if you do. Registration is usually done on their website with the serial number and purchase date. If you register, screenshot the confirmation and keep it with the receipt.

Registration is not always required, so read the terms. If you are not sure, keeping the receipt and serial number is the important part.

What about extended warranties?

Shops sometimes offer extended cover at the checkout. If you buy it, treat it like any other warranty: save the policy, note the end date and set a reminder. If you do not buy it, you are still covered by the manufacturer's warranty and by any rights you have under local consumer law.

Choosing a warranty tracker app

A warranty tracker app is any app that stores your purchase details and reminds you before cover ends. If you are choosing one, look for these features:

  • It keeps receipts and product photos together.
  • It finds dates for you, or makes them quick to enter.
  • It sends a reminder you will actually notice.
  • It keeps your receipts private, since they can show your address and payment details.
  • It lets you search by product or shop name years later.

You can also manage with a calendar reminder and a tagged album, as long as you do it every time.

If you are also tracking returns, read never miss a return window again. For keeping online receipts tidy, see using screenshots to keep track of online receipts.

How Screenshot Brain helps

Screenshot Brain spots warranty and expiry dates, as well as return deadlines, in the text of your screenshots and reminds you before time runs out. You can snap a paper receipt to keep it alongside your online ones, and rename items and add tags such as "warranty" so they are easy to find. The text is read on your phone, and receipts sort themselves into a Receipts collection.

Frequently asked questions

Is a screenshot of a receipt enough for a warranty claim?

Often it is, but each manufacturer has its own rules. Keep the original invoice or confirmation email too, especially for expensive items.

Where do I find a product's serial number?

Look for a label on the back, bottom or inside a compartment, or in the device's settings menu for electronics. The box often shows it as well.

Does the warranty start on the purchase date or the delivery date?

Usually the purchase date, but some terms differ. Check the warranty wording and keep both dates if you can.

Can I still claim after the warranty ends?

Sometimes. Depending on where you live, consumer law may give you rights beyond the manufacturer's warranty for faults that should not have happened. Contact the seller to ask.
