Make a résumé PDF on your phone from a template

To make a résumé on your phone, start from a resume template PDF or document, replace the sample text with your own details, check it on a full page view, and export it as a PDF. A template saves you from fighting with layout on a small screen, so you can focus on the words. Send the PDF rather than an editable file, so it looks the same for every recruiter.

Why use a resume template PDF?

A résumé (often called a CV outside North America) is judged in seconds. A clean, familiar layout helps a reader find your experience quickly. Building that layout from scratch on a phone is slow. A template gives you the headings, spacing and fonts already set, and you fill them in.

PDF is the safest format to send because:

  • it looks the same on every device and in every hiring system that accepts it;
  • fonts and spacing cannot shift on the reader's screen;
  • nobody can accidentally edit it while reading.

Some job portals ask for a Word file instead. If they do, send what they ask for.

What to put on a résumé

Most résumés include these sections, in roughly this order:

  1. Name and contact details: phone, email and city. A full street address is rarely needed.
  2. A short profile: two or three lines on who you are and what you are looking for.
  3. Experience: job title, employer, dates and a few bullet points on what you achieved.
  4. Education: qualifications, institution and dates.
  5. Skills: practical ones that match the job, such as languages, software or licences.
  6. Optional extras: certifications, volunteering or projects, if they are relevant.

Check local customs. In some countries a photo, date of birth or nationality is expected; in others, recruiters prefer you leave them out.

How to make a résumé on your phone, step by step

  1. Choose a résumé template. Simple, single-column layouts read best on screens and in hiring systems.
  2. Replace the sample name and contact details with yours first.
  3. Write your experience, most recent job first.
  4. Keep bullet points short and specific: "Cut stock errors by reorganizing the stockroom" beats "Responsible for stock".
  5. Add education and skills.
  6. Delete any template sections you do not need. Empty headings look unfinished.
  7. Preview the full page. Check nothing has spilled onto an extra page.
  8. Export or save as a PDF.
  9. Name the file clearly, such as "Aisha-Rahman-CV.pdf".
  10. Open the PDF and read it once more before sending.

Writing tips that work on a small screen

  • Write in short lines. Phones make long paragraphs feel even longer, and so do recruiters.
  • Start bullets with a verb: led, built, trained, reduced, sold.
  • Use numbers you can stand behind, such as team size or how many customers you served each day. Do not guess.
  • Tailor the profile to each job. It is the easiest part to change.
  • Proofread in a different view. Errors are easier to spot on the exported PDF than in the editor.

How long should a résumé be?

For most people, one or two pages. Early-career résumés usually fit on one. Long academic CVs are the exception. If you are over two pages, cut older or less relevant roles to a single line each.

Adding certificates and a cover letter

Many applications ask for supporting documents. You can scan certificates, then merge them with your résumé into one application pack. See how to scan documents to PDF with your phone and how to merge PDF files on your phone. Add bookmarks so the recruiter can jump between your CV and each certificate.

Before you send it

  • Check the file size. Some portals limit uploads. If yours is too big, see how to get a PDF under 1 MB, 500 KB or 200 KB.
  • Check the title. The PDF's internal title may still say "Template" or "Untitled". Fix it so it shows your name. See how to change a PDF's title and author.
  • Check links. If you added your portfolio or LinkedIn address, tap them in the PDF to make sure they work.
  • Check your email address. A simple, professional address helps.

Frequently asked questions

Is a CV the same as a résumé?

In many countries the words mean the same thing. In North America, a résumé is usually short, while a CV is a longer academic record.

Should my résumé have a photo?

It depends on the country and the industry. In some places it is expected, in others it is discouraged to reduce bias. Follow the norm where you are applying.

Can hiring systems read a PDF résumé?

Most can, as long as the PDF contains real text rather than a scanned image. Simple layouts without text in images or complex columns are the safest.

Should I send my résumé as PDF or Word?

PDF, unless the employer asks for Word. A PDF keeps your layout exactly as you made it.
